HRSG Bypass Stack System
Bypass stack system has a three-way valve that discharges exhaust gas from the GT, either into the atmosphere via a by-pass stack or into a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). As well as high capacity, it surpasses the norm in terms of geometrical sealing, sealing pressure and closing time, while reducing maintenance and easing transportation and assembly. This new diverter also allows for a rapid transition from single cycle to combined cycle systems.
The use of bypass stacks also allows combined cycle operation during the day and simple cycle operation at night when electricity demand is lowest, resulting in greater savings in operating costs and efficiency over the life of the power plant. The bypass stack and diverter system allows the gas turbine to generate electricity, keeping the plant running and avoiding potential blackouts even when the steam turbine cycle is shut down due to planned or unplanned shutdowns.
As with any major power plant equipment, heat recovery steam generators and bypass stacks require regular maintenance. These components are subject to extremely high temperatures. Although these components work together to extend the life cycle and efficiency of the plant, they must be in working order and in good condition to operate at full capacity. In a combined cycle power generation facility or an industrial cogeneration plant, HRSG is an important part of the overall plant efficiency. Because HRSGs and bypass stacks are large metal structures that are often subject to extensive temperature fluctuations and environmental concerns, the system requires active attention to ensure continued reliability.
